The Australian Environment Minister Greg Hunt visited the Jinglemoney Soil Carbon Project located just outside of Braidwood NSW along with local MP and Assistant Finance Minister Dr Peter Hendy on Monday 16 May.
The farm owner is Rodney Royds, a fifth generation farmer that has lived and worked in the Braidwood area all of his life. Jinglemoney has been a family owned and operated farm for over 60 years. The property is approximately 500 hectares and runs cattle and sheep. The aim of the Emissions Reduction Fund project is to increase the productivity of the pasture by increasing the amount of soil carbon through intensive application of compost and other soil amendments. The project was successful in gaining an ERF carbon abatement contract in the first ERF auction.
The soil improvement program ‘Soil Sense’ has been designed by Australian Soil Management (ASM) and aims to increase pasture productivity by delivering a one-per-cent increase in soil organic carbon over the short to medium term. The principals of ASM Norman Marshall and Dr Greg Bender were on hand conducting the technical soil sampling as part of providing a soil carbon baseline for the project.
A key feature of the Soil Sense program is the use of recycled organics to improve soil health and regenerate pastures. Recycled organics will be sourced from Cooma and used in repeat applications, in combination with the addition of select amendments to balance out mineral deficiencies in the soil.
The soil carbon project forms part of Corporate Carbon’s diverse portfolio of ERF projects. Corporate Carbon is in the business of developing solutions for ERF participation through collaboration and aggregation. This model of engagement has been built on experience and learnings gained through pioneering projects with the Carbon Farming Initiative and Emissions Reduction Fund. To date the model has proved very successful with more than 50 projects registered across a wide variety of ERF method areas, including alternative waste treatment, industrial electricity and fuel efficiency, and land sector projects such as savanna fire management and soil carbon. Corporate Carbon is Australia’s largest multi-sectoral carbon contractor under the ERF.
