Select Harvests is Australia’s largest vertically integrated nut and health food business with core capabilities across horticulture, orchard management, processing, sales and marketing. Their almond orchards are located in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales. ASM have been working with Select Harvests to demonstrate the benefit of compost treatments to improve soil health and crop yield.
Baseline soil analysis and treatments commenced in Autumn 2016. Soils at the Narrandera site are deep sands with no structure. Irrigation water is supplied through dripper lines running down rows. Fertigation is used to supply nutrients in soluble forms.
Noticeable improvements have been observed in leaf vigour for ASM treated rows. Shell weights are up 8%, number of kernels increased by 12% and kernel weights are up 10%. Soil test results from ASM treated rows show dramatic improvements in soil fertility. A customised compost blend provided a three-fold increase in organic matter and a two fold increase in nutrient availability. Further increases in soil fertility and productivity are expected from a continuation of the ASM program.
This Case Study was jointly funded by ASM and the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA). NSW EPA provided financial support under their Organics Market Development Program to demonstrate the use of recycled organics (compost) on farms in NSW.
